I’ll Let You Win

Do stay a moment.

We’ll play chess and pretend.

We’ll have tea,

lying flat on our bellies,

board on the floor,

(Tacks will do for the missing pieces.)

and consider the opening moves.

Pawn to Queen 4

or perhaps a surprise,

nothing in vain. I’ll let you win.

Your knight has flown.

Blood’s on his trail, the castle’s a mess.

Sacrifice?

Yes, take what you want.

Just give me some time

to ponder these fields,

these lovely fields.

The endgame will come as early as Spring.

You’ll ride through the forest

with what’s left of your men.

I’ll walk down from the garden

on polished stone steps

(Wasn’t it this?)

and let you in.
